Ibo elder and frontline businessman and media mogul, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu on Monday debunked reports that he said the Yoruba are political rascals, describing it as fake news, Sunrise reports.

Iwuanyanwu is ostensibly denying a video where he, speaking at the first year anniversary of the Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, in Awka, called Yoruba people political rascals, and vowing that his people will deal with them.

He claimed the video was doctored.

Ever since the video hit the social media on Saturday, it has elicited wild condemnation and accusations from Nigerians, especially the Yoruba.

But the Igbo elder, in a statement on Monday said his attention has been drawn to the fake news circulating on social media which he claimed completely misrepresented the statement he made in Awka, Anambra State, in connection to the killings, destructions of properties, and harassment of Ibo people in Lagos during the recent elections.

“My statement was covered live by Arise Television, Channels, and many other electronic and print media houses. All Nigerians of goodwill who care should get the true transcript of my statement from any of these media houses,” he said.

But the undoctored video on Channels shows that Iwuanyanwu made the statement that Yoruba people are political rascals.

He added in his statement, “I want to make it abundantly clear that at no time did I make the statement credited to me by blackmailers, circulating on social media, that the Yoruba are political rascals as this was fraudulently manipulated.

“The seven Igbo-speaking states namely — Rivers, Delta, Imo, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Enugu states — have honoured me with the traditional title of Ahaejiagamba Ndigbo.”

According to him, most of his close friends who had influenced his business and professional life were from the northern and western parts of Nigeria.

Iwuanyanwu said he is the Balogun Babagunwa of Ibadan land and that he had also been honoured with Chieftaincy titles by numerous Yoruba Obas.

“I am no doubt an honorary citizen of Yoruba land. I have many personal friends and staff of my various companies including directors who are Yorubas.

“Most of them played major roles in shaping my economic destiny. I, therefore, do not have any reason whatsoever to insult the Yoruba tribe whom I regard with great respect,” he said.

Iwuanyanwu said he did mention that those who carried out the attack on Ibos in Lagos were political rascals, whose action did not reflect the good relationship between the Igbo and Yoruba.

The federal government through the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has ordered Google LLC (Play Store) and Apple Inc. (App Store) to enforce the withdrawal of certain applications belonging to illegal online banks operating in Nigeria.

The Commission said the order became imperative as it had established inappropriate conduct or use of the application in violation of the rights of consumers.

The Order of the Commission also prohibits acceptance and presentation of new applications for the same purpose without regulatory assessment and approval.

The FCCPC said these in a statement issued on Monday which was personally signed by the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Babatunde Irukera.

The FCCPC Boss said the order is in furtherance of the action taken by the Inter-Agency Joint Regulatory and Enforcement Task Force last Friday, which led to the shutdown of some online banks.

The Enforcement Team is made up of the FCCPC, Nigeria Information Technology Development Agency, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission

The statement reads, “In furtherance, and pursuant to an Order of the Federal High Court procured by, and granted to the FCCPC, the JRETF executed a search and seizure Order on certain digital money lenders.

“As part of the operation, the JRETF together with the Nigeria Police Force and bailiff of the Federal High Court searched locations of the money lenders, extracted valuable evidence and in some circumstances prohibited or restricted continuing operations.

“In addition to the physical operation noted above, the Commission entered and served Orders on multiple financial institutions freezing or suspending operations of certain accounts which some of the money lenders have used to conduct implicated business or transactions subject of investigation.

“Further, the Commission also entered and served wide ranging orders on Google LLC (Play Store) and Apple Inc. (App Store) to enforce the withdrawal of certain applications where evidence has established inappropriate conduct or use of the application in violation of the rights of consumers.

“The Order of the Commission also prohibits acceptance and presentation of new applications for the same purpose without regulatory assessment and approval.”

The statement said the investigation by the Enforcement Team is still active and ongoing, adding that the team expects further and similar action as it continues to gather additional intelligence to that effect.

“In the interim, the Commission admonishes all the businesses that were subject of regulatory intervention on Friday, March 11, 2022, to cease and desist the interest compounding and loan repayment/collection practices that are the objects of this investigation.

“In the event that any of these businesses continue in any of this conduct, or the Commission receives credible evidence of such, violators will be subjected to the full extent of the law including prosecution without option of administrative regulatory resolution.

“The Orders of the Commission are without prejudice to existing borrowers repaying any legitimate loans pursuant to fair and acceptable terms and conditions; or any modifications to previous terms and conditions that are considered onerous, inconsistent with prevailing law or general principles of transparency and fairness.

“The obligation to comply with the above extends to all operatives, employees or agents of the affected businesses.

“The JRETF welcomes any useful information that may assist this investigation. The Commission/JRETF will continue to provide updates to the public, and invites consumers to support the investigation by continuing to provide actionable intelligence about persons associated with the businesses or practices, their telephone numbers and any other pertinent information,” it added.

The Council Chairmen of Ikorodu, Epe, Badagry, Surulere, Eti-Osa and Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Areas, have thrown their weight behind the community-based tourism initiative being championed by the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

The six LGAs had earlier been shortlisted by the Ministry to kick start the first phase of its Community-based Tourism initiative.

The Chairmen made the pledge individually when officials of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, led by the Honourable Commissioner, Mrs. Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, the Special Adviser, Mr. Solomon Bonu, and the Permanent Secretary, Princess Adenike Adedoyin-Ajayi, as well as other senior officials, were on a sensitisation visit to the six local councils.

Akinbile-Yussuf, during the visit to Epe Local Government, expressed delight with the acceptance of the Community-based Tourism initiative by the leadership of the Council.

In her words: “I am so happy and delighted that people we need to talk to are here, particularly the community people, so the information we are passing now is that we should all embrace this Community-based Tourism initiative because there is so much we can do as far as our tradition and culture are concerned in our different localities”.

The Permanent Secretary, Princess Adenike Adedoyin-Ajayi, said the Ministry had reviewed tourism activities in Lagos State and came up with different initiatives that would enhance the growth of tourism, adding that one of such initiatives is the concept of Community-based Tourism.

Princess Adedoyin-Ajayi stressed that the sensitisation exercise is to enlighten the LGAs about the intentions of the State Government, which are premised on the belief that the economy of the State can further improve if its various communities take ownership of tourism potentials around them.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor, Mr. Tunji Seymour, remarked that the team was going across the six pilot LGAs to promote Community Based Tourism, saying that the initiative will bring government to the grassroots, take miscreants off the streets, improve businesses and also create synergy between the State and Local Governments.

The Chairmen of Epe, Ikorodu, Badagry, Surulere, Eti-Osa and Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Areas, Princess Olayemi Animashaun, Mr. Adeshina Wasiu, Mr. Olusegun Onilude, Mr. Sulaiman Bamidele Yusuf, Mr. Saheed Adesegun Bankole and Otunba Kehinde Almoroof Oloyede, applauded the initiative of Communit-Based Tourism by the State Government.
They promised to give necessary support for the success of the programme in their respective local councils.

The planned regulation of media practice and the media space in the country has been described as an ill wind that will blow the country no good.

Speaking in Abuja on the topic: “The Media and the Defence of the Civic Space,” organised by the Kukah Centre, in conjunction with OSIWA and the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation, panelists submitted that the media has enough mechanism to regulate itself and does not need any new law.

The team of panelists include; respected practitioners, Executive Director/CEO, Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ), Motunrayo Alaka, Former Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief, The Guardian and Fellow, Weatherhead Centre, Harvard University, Emeka Izeze, Managing Director, Arise News, Christian Ogodo, Head of Current Affairs, DAAR Communications Plc, Amaechi Anakwue, and Digital Media Strategist and International Speaker, J.J. Omojuwa.

Izeze said Nigeria civil space predate government as we have been having civilized conversations that make us Nigerians despite our social, cultural and religious dichotomy.

He said Nigerian civil space has grown in leaps and bounds, and has been responsible for the political development of the country, from colonial rule, through first republic to military rule, then second republic back to military rule until the new democratic governance.

Izeze said the civil space unfortunately is threatened now even more than under the military dictatorship and there is now need to return to the vibrant Nigerian civil space which makes Nigerian different and distinct from any other nationalities.

On his part, Christian Ogodo said the universe has become smaller due to the impact of technology which has brought everybody closer together and has changed the civil space, making everyone a media or what is now known as social media practitioner.

He said it has become impossible to clampdown on the media like it was done in the past when journalists could easily been locked up.

He said with the advent of the social media, everyone is now a journalist on the move, insisting however that those without prerequisite training have brought new challenges that need to be addressed.

He however said that both traditional and social media have mechanisms to weed off the chaff and should be allowed to grow unimpeded.

Anakwue said Nigeria used to have active civil space before independence which continued to expand until 1999, but now we have witnessed a space that is shrinking, lamenting that “corruption has affected everything and the media is being swallowed.”

He added that the pressure that has made it difficult for traditional media to effectively function is now taken up by the social media.

Alaka said the civil space is now tensed and facing uncertainties at the moment in the country, calling on the media being the oldest institution of democracy to come out to play the role assigned to it by the constitution.

She said: “The fact we see today is that the legislators despite the fact that they should be representatives of the people are representing themselves.”

She however said: “Good that we have the social media to broaden the civil space but it has brought with it its challenges.”

Omojuwa said there should be accountability for the active participants on the civil space, insisting that you cannot ask for accountability when you cannot yourself be held accountable.

All the panelists, however admitted that the media has in-built mechanisms to regulate its practitioners and need no external control or new laws.

In his keynote address, the Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Rev. Fr. Matthew Hasan Kukah said the advent of the social media which has created “journalists” all over is not necessarily a bad thing.

He likened journalists to the faith community, insisting that “journalism and faith community are the same, just like the faith community where we have churches all over the advent of social media has created journalists and editors everywhere.”

He however said there is no need for government to introduce regulation as it is left for the people to decide which medium to be trusted.

The fashion house, Gucci has cancelled its Cruise 2021 show due to the ongoing Coronavirus (covid-19) outbreak.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Italian fashion house confirmed its decision to cancel the show which was due to take place on May 18, in a statement.

A spokesperson for Gucci said the brand’s decision resulted from “the ongoing uncertainty prompted by the Coronavirus outbreak” saying it was “a precautionary measure”.

“A decision on the new timing and location of the show will be announced at a later date, once the situation becomes clearer.

“At this time, our thoughts are with all of those affected around the world,” the statement said.

According to reports, the brand’s creative director, Alessandro Michele initially chose an American city to host the show due to its reputation as centre of liberal activism and cultural melting pot.

NAN reports that the show was the latest in a series of global fashion industry events that had been affected by the virus.

In February, Prada announced that it had decided to postpone its Cruise 2021 show, which was scheduled to take place on May 21 in Tokyo, due to Corona virus fears.

With Cruise season fast-approaching, it remained unclear as to whether more brands would be forced to follow suit.

Giorgio Armani was expected to kick off the event with its Cruise offering in Dubai on April 19.

However, there were concerns that it may be postponed after the brand decided to cancel its autumn/winter 2020 show during Milan Fashion Week amid the Corona virus threat in Italy.

Instead, Armani opted to live stream the runway in an empty theatre across the fashion house’s social media channels.

In a statement, the brand said the decision was made “to safeguard the wellbeing of all his invited guests by not having them attend crowded spaces”.

So far, more than 98,000 people were known to be infected with Corona virus and more than 3,000 deaths have been recorded.

Meanwhile, Italy became one of the worst affected countries after an outbreak in northern provinces of Lombardy and Veneto, which  saw death toll rose to 52 while confirmed cases increased to 1,835.

Plans are underway by the Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to turn all the Independent Campaign Centres in the state into Citizens Consultative Centres.

This according to the governor is aimed at ensuring that government and policies are closer to the residents of Lagos State in all the 3 Senatorial Districts ( Lagos West, Lagos East and Lagos Central).

He said the offices of the four Independent Campaign Group (ICG) would be open to citizens to submit any of their policy input and demands that would help in achieving the developmental agenda of his administration.

This was disclosed by the Senior Special Assistant on Political Matters to the Governor, Mr Peter Ajayi, who went to inspect the various offices in the state.

Ajayi stated that the essence of the visitation was to assess the state of things in the campaign offices, saying that the Governor is keen in making his policies to have people’s input.

He added that the decision to turn the campaign offices to consultative centres was to galvanize input from the general public into the policy process of his government.

” These centres will serve as offices where Lagosians can come to submit letters of policy demand and also meet to delibrate issues of public importance. He added ” It is at the centres that the distribution of welfare packages to the people during festive periods will take place and this will ease the stress of them coming to Government House which had been the norm”
