Celebrating the 90th birthday of Professor Wole Soyinka is akin to unveiling a dual tapestry where the initials ‘W.S.’ weave a spellbinding narrative across continents and centuries. Like Shakespeare, whose timeless quill navigated the intricate depths of humanity’s folly, Soyinka’s pen has carved indelible truths into the annals of African literature.

Their shared initials are more than mere coincidence; they symbolize a legacy where words are swords and stories are shields, challenging injustices and illuminating paths to justice. As we honor Soyinka’s literary prowess and profound impact on global consciousness, his journey resonates as a testament to the enduring power of words to provoke thought and inspire change.

In the annals of literary history, certain names resonate with timeless brilliance. Today, as Professor Wole Soyinka marks his 90th birthday, we celebrate not just a milestone in years but a lifetime of unparalleled contributions to literature, culture, and human rights.

In addition to his literary achievements, Professor Wole Soyinka has significantly impacted journalism in Nigeria through the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ). Established to promote excellence in journalism, the center recognizes outstanding work across various media categories—from print and radio to online platforms and editorial cartoons. It honors investigations that expose regulatory failures, public and corporate corruption, and human rights abuses within the country.

Born in Nigeria on July 13, 1934, Soyinka’s journey as a playwright, poet, and essayist has mirrored the tumultuous evolution of modern Africa. His pen, much like Shakespeare’s quill centuries before, has carved narratives that defy boundaries and resonate across continents.

Parallel of Initials: W.S. and Literary Legacy

The initials ‘W.S.’ evoke more than mere coincidence when speaking of Soyinka and Shakespeare. Both luminaries have wielded language as a mighty sword, cutting through the complexities of their times with unparalleled insight and creativity. Shakespeare’s impact on global literature is indisputable, his plays performed from Stratford-upon-Avon to Tokyo. Similarly, Soyinka’s works, from “Death and the King’s Horseman” to “A Shuttle in the Crypt,” resonate deeply within Africa and beyond, challenging readers and audiences alike to confront societal injustices and human dilemmas.

Literary Legacy and Global Influence

Shakespeare’s legacy spans the globe, his themes of love, power, and human folly finding echoes in every corner of the world. Soyinka, too, has enriched the tapestry of African literature with his exploration of identity, politics, and the human condition. From winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986 to his activism against oppressive regimes, Soyinka’s voice echoes far beyond Nigeria’s borders, inspiring generations to strive for justice and freedom.

Humanitarian Contributions and Personal Reflections

Beyond their literary prowess, both Soyinka and Shakespeare share a commitment to speaking truth to power. Soyinka’s activism during Nigeria’s political turmoil and his unwavering defense of human rights mirrors Shakespeare’s own critique of power dynamics in Elizabethan England. Reflecting on his journey, Soyinka reminds us that literature is not just a mirror but a catalyst for change, urging us to challenge injustice wherever it may reside.

As we celebrate Professor Wole Soyinka’s 90th birthday, we honor a man whose words have stirred souls and ignited minds across continents. His literary genius and unwavering commitment to justice serve as a beacon for future generations of writers and activists. In a world hungry for wisdom and compassion, Soyinka stands tall, a testament to the enduring power of literature to shape our understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

He added that, “If I were president Tinubu, after the election, when I noticed that the Southeast people didn’t vote for me, I would have released Kanu to counter them; releasing Kanu can make some of them say, ‘oh this man has a good intention’”.

He made the call amid an appeal by the 2023 Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate, Peter Obi and other Nigerians that Tinubu should release Kanu.

The younger brother of former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, Isaac, has called on President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and give him contracts like ex-President Goodluck Jonathan did with Niger Delta militant leader, Tompolo.

Fayose said Kanu’s release would help Tinubu get more votes from the Southeast in 2027.

In a video on his Instagram handle, Fayose said releasing Kanu would reduce the level of insecurity in the Southeast.

According to him: “Releasing Nnamdi Kanu will reduce crime in the South-East by 50%. And APC will get more votes in 2027.

“If President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan can give a contract to Tompolo to have peace in the Niger Delta, why can’t we do the same in the South-East?”

“If we are spending so much money on security in the Southeast, the money will be reduced by 50% releasing Kanu,” Fayose advised.

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Hon. Justice John Tsoho, has ordered the transfer of the cases challenging the defection of the 25 state lawmakers in Rivers State from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Tsoho ordered that the cases be transferred from Federal High Court 4, Port Harcourt, presided over by Justice Steven Dalyop Pam, to Court Two headed by Justice E. O. Obele.

The CJ ordered the transfer of the case following a petition by a defendant in the matter, Hon. Martins Amaewhule, demanding that the cases against him be transferred to another court.

The cases are one instituted by the BOOT Party and others as plaintiffs in suit number FHC/PHC/269/2024 and another by civil society organisations in the state against Amaewhule and others, all on the defection of the defendants to APC.

When the court resumed on Monday for hearing, it was confronted with a petition signed by Martin Amaewhule addressed to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Hon. Justice John Tsoho, seeking the case to be reassigned to another court.

The presiding judge, Justice Steven Dalyop Pam, who read the petition in the open court, had noted that the petitioner, Amaewhule, was praying to the CJ of the High Court to stop the hearing process following the petition.

When the petition was read, counsel for the plaintiff, BOOT Party, Mr Reuben Wanogho, informed the court that the petition was aimed at arresting the ongoing case and urged the court to ignore it.

But counsel for the 1st to 25th defendants in the suit, Ferdinand Orbi, denied knowledge of the petition by his client and prayed the court to adhere to the petition and stop further proceeding if the letter was addressed to the CJ of the court.

However, the presiding judge, Justice Pam, noted that in the first instance, the petitioner (Amaewhule) has no motion, or counter affidavit before him and that he is not yet known in the case.

Motorists in Lagos, are in for a tough time as facts has emerged that the state’s Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has a target to generate N2.5 billion into government coffers from fines from traffic offences this year.

This is contained in the 2024 budget of the Lagos State Government, signed into law by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

In the budget, the Ministry of Transportation is to generate N52.48 billion this year, out of which LASTMA is to rake in N2,505,000,000.

The Lagos State budget was part of the Federal and state by state budget contained in Open Nigeria, a web page managed by BUDGIT Nigeria and supported by the British Council. It contains budget documents of all the federating states of Nigeria since 2009.

BUDGIT Nigeria has been a strong advocate for accountability in governance, ensuring that Nigerian budget count for governance and for the poor to have the dividends of democratic governance.

In the 2023 budget, LASTMA was given N2.35 billion as revenue target. The Authority raked in N703.486 million between January and September, 2023. The revenue generation in the last three months (October-December of the year was not captured in the budget.

Asides LASTMA, the Ministry of Transportation targets N11.28 billion revenue this year, while the Lagos State Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), is to generate N10.3 billion.

The Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA) has a budget of N17.059 billion revenue target. In 2023, though it targets N16.399 billion revenue, it could only generate N7.196 billion between January and September 2023.

Also, the Lagos State Parking Authority is to generate N4.1 billion this year. In the previous year, the agency posted N450.9 million between January and September 2023 out of the N1.75 billion it was given in the year.

The Lagos State Number Plate and Production Authority has a revenue generation target of N6.2 billion, which is more that the N5.23 billion revenue target the previous year.

Lagos State has a total of seven million vehicles, estimate, as at 2022, out of which mixed commercial (trucks/buses) are four million and three million private vehicles. Also found in Lagos are a surfeit of motorized motorcycles, and rickshaws (tricycles).

The Lagos State Government had always insisted that all agencies and departments established under the Ministry of Transportation were not revenue generating.

It however acknowledged that it would not hesitate to make revenue from fines from motorists who are not ready to comply with the regulations concerning transportation and traffic management in the state.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) announced that its special operation unit has taken down a cartel controlled by a drug baron, 49-year-old Kelechi Monday Nwaobasi, and his 50-year-old elder sister, Ms. Chinwe Rose Nwaobasi.

The NDLEA said the development followed the arrest of the suspects’ siblings and the seizure of cocaine and methamphetamine consignments worth over N4.1 billion in street value from their hideout in Aba, Abia State.

Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, stated in a statement on Sunday that the special operation conducted on Thursday, 13th, and Friday, 14th June 2024, at 3B Boundary Avenue, Aba, and a residence along Ohia Road, Ohia, Abia State, followed months of intelligence gathering, leading to the arrest of the ring leaders and the combined seizure of 20.76 kilograms of cocaine and methamphetamine from them.

Babafemi also announced that the NDLEA operatives in Lagos State have uncovered an expansive warehouse stocked with a large consignment of codeine-based syrup, located in the Comfort Oboh area of Kirikiri.
