Theirs was a story of extremes. One was the tallest in camp and might have approached the youth corps camp with some fears, the other was the shortest, who felt her height was her greatest undoing. Perhaps, like negative poles, they got attracted to each other, and the rest, as they say, is history.

They are the latest in the growing list of what Nigeria’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), fondly called Youth Corps has joined together.

The viral photos of the love birds was shared on her Facebook Timeline on Thursday by the lady, Innocent Ruth, and the photos of the lovers have caused a stir on the Internet.

In a viral post, Ruth mused how the NYSC camp favoured her as the “shortest” corps member following her love affair with the “tallest” corps member in the camp.

Sharing loved-up photos of themselves, she wrote, “We met in NYSC camp ohhhh. so this camp go favour me like this???? We became friends and the rest is history.

The couple with their trophy.

“NYSC tallest and shortest corpers. Congratulations to us.”

Read the full Congratulatory message below:

Tribute To Pastor Adeboye At 80

Your humility, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, respected man of God and General Overseer of one of the largest churches in the world, is topnotch.

As you clock 80, I want to say it is only God that could have blessed you with such an age and agility. Many people would hardly believe that you are already 80. Your physical strength remains. I have never seen you read the Bible or any other material with difficulty, your gait confirms your strength. This proves Gods words that He would bless those He would bless. It also reminds of how God blessed Moses in Deuteronomy 34:7 to the extent that even at 120, his eyes were not dim and his vitality never waned. Dear Pastor Adeboye, you are blessed!

Thank you for being a foster father to a lot of Nigerians. Thank you for adding your voice at all times when issues that need your fatherly advice or words of wisdom arise. Your contributions to the efforts at having a peaceful Nigeria cannot be over-emphasised. We follow your teachings, we hear your appraisal and words of encouragement.

We thank God for picking you to lead the Redeemed Christian Church of God. Today, like always, there is no doubting the fact that you were truly and divinely chosen to lead His flock. The growth, progress and expansion of Gods work across the globe with you being the head of the RCCG are attestations to your effectiveness as a religious leader. There is no way religious leaders would be listed globally without your name in a prominent position. And to many clergymen in Nigeria, you remain a father figure, a teacher and inspiration.

You have been a source of encouragement to us in Lagos State. We thank you for always praying for us and for your wise counsels. We appreciate your time because you are always there whenever we need you.

Your attainment of 80 years on earth is significant in the sense that it proves God’s love for you and for us who gain from your tutelage.

On behalf of my family, colleagues and staff of the Lagos State House of Assembly, I celebrate you on this special occasion of your 80th birthday. I also pray that God bless you with more wisdom, divine health and protection so that you can continue to be of service to Him and humanity, amen.

Congratulations sir!

Rt. Hon. (Dr) Mudashiru Obasa

Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly.

Sickle Cell-based Non-Governmental Organisations and healthcare practitioners on Thursday advocated increased advocacy and government interventions towards managing Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) in the country.

The NGOs and medical experts made the call at Project GenEducation, a Sickle Cell Awareness, Education and Advocacy Roundtable Meeting oganised by CrimsonBow SCI, a Resource Community for Sickle Cell Warriors.

The meeting, which brought together various stakeholders in the fight against sickle cell dissease, was sponsored by Ford Foundation.

The high level engagement was organised in conjunction with Sickle Cell Foundation Nigera, Sickle Cell Advocacy and Management IInitiative,, TonyMay Foundation, Genotype Foundation among others.

The event, tagged “Sickle Cell Advocacy: Partnership for Healthcare and Inclusiveness”, had in attendance various healthcare practitioners in the state and federal ministry, department and agency of health, aside those who joined virtually.

Speaking, Miss Timi Edwin, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer, CrimsonBow SCI, said over 13,000 people had been positively affect in the sickle cell advocacy, with support of various NGOs.

Edwin, who noted that the mission was to inspire hope and support for sickle cell patients, called for more commitment from government and lawmakers on awareness and interventions toward improving quality of lives of people living with SCD.

The founder, who is also sickle cell patient, lamented the crisis and financial burden of managing the disease.

He, however, commended the government’s efforts on new born screening, saying such should be extending to adults at free of little charge in across healthcare facility.

On insurance, she called for free insurance for sickle cell disease, adding that its management could be difficult for the poor masses.

Delivering a keynote address, Prof. Akin Osinbogun, Chiarman, Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board, said that sickle cell dissease could be an economic burden, calling for prevention through massive advocacy and awareness.

Osinbogun, whose speech was delivered by Dr Abdulkabir Adegoke, Senior Resident and Chief Resident, Department of Community Health and Primary Care, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, said that the studies had reported the prevalence of the Sickle Cell trait in Nigeria to be as high as 25 per cent.

According to him, this implies that 1-in-4 Nigerians have the trait and 1-3 per cent have sickle cell disease.

He said that a 1982 study had estimated that about 30,000 babies are born annually in Nigeria with SCD, saying “The numbers will be even higher now given the increase in the Nigerian population.

“This huge disease burden is also an economic burden in terms of the cost of managing this chronic condition.

“The cost of managing sickle cell dissease is so high, the best option is prevention. Sickle Cell disease affect a large number of Nigeria but it can be prevented.

“It is therefore important to make information available to individuals, families and communities to reduce the likelihood of couples having HbSS babies.”

He said that it was equally important to make information about treatment options and advances in management available to patients with SCD and their relatives.

“High level advocacy to policy makers and purse holders is indeed very important to ensure that the investments required for prevention, control and management of SCD are made.

“I commend the Lagos State Government for its support to the LUTH Bone Marrow Transplantation Centre. This is testimony that advocacy works.”

Dr Alayo Sopekun, Desk Officer, Sickle Cell Control Programme, Federal Ministry of Health, said: “We still need to do a lot more in awareness creation, advocacy and in improving the quality of life for those who are living with Sickle Cell Disease.

“We must ensure that we reduce, however it is going to be, out-of-pocket expenses for them.

“We should provide a lead in intervention and advocacy. It is better we prevent it than managing it.”

He said that the ministry, asides expanding the national immunisation programmes vaccines for prevention and reviewing of essential medicine list, had been screening new born babies for prevention of SCD.

Sopekun said that the cost of managing SCD informed the call for the review of the NHIS by the National Assembly to provide a scheme that works for everyone including NCDs.

Also speaking, Dr Olurotimi Agbolagorite, Director Public Health, the Lagos State Ministry of Health, who applauded the state government’s efforts in the fight against SCD, called for more training of specialists to prevent further spread of SCD.

Agbolagorite represented by Dr Abosede Wellington in charge of Non Communicable Disease (NCD) said that Lagos had been doing a lot on sickle cell dissease especially on blood transfusion, calling for collaboration of relevant stakeholders.

Agbolagorite, who called for adequate counselling services for people, especially intending couples, said: “Counseling and advocacy on genetype screening will a long way.”

Also speaking, Dr Moyo Olomola, from the Health Insurance Inclusion for People Living With Sickle Cell, said that Health Management Organisations (HMOs) had been making finances of sickle cell affordable.

Olomola said: “We can improve their quality of life. We advocate that they all subscribe. It has a lot of benefits for the patient to live quality life.”

An expert, Dr Chris Otigbuo said that medical, nursing, pharmacy and health technology schools should have indepth medical education on Sickle Cell Disease to be able to manage the patients.

Otigbuo said that if tuberculosis patients could have their drugs free, the sickle cell patients should also have, calling for decisive role by the government at all levels to support SCD.

Dr Makinde Akinlemibola, the Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners, Lagos State said that everybody should be enlightened concerning sickle cell dissease, considering the prevalence of Sickle cell.

Akinlemibola said: “There is the need to continue to enlightening people to put SCD in public space. It is necessary to create fund for the patients.

The Wife of the Lagos State Governor, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, represented by Dr Juliana Olusanya, Medical Director, General Hospital, Ebute Meta, commended various stakeholders called on stakeholders to play their role to reduce the risk of SCD.

A visually impaired newspaper vendor, Mr Hakeem Olukorede, has appealed to corporate organisations and philanthropists for financial assistance to treat Glaucoma.

The 50-year-old vendor, who operates around Gowon Estate, Egbeda, Lagos State, said on Friday that the assistance would help him to get treatment and return to his furniture business.

“I don’t like the newspaper business because the stress is too much for me with my condition.

“But I don’t have any option for now and I don’t want to sit at home because if I sit at home, I will be full of worries.

“Actually, this is not my business. I’m a furniture man. I learnt furniture making and I attended the Government Technical School in Ikotun, Alimosho Local Government Area,’’ he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Olukerede said he completed his technical education in 1989, and had since then been doing the furniture business until he started having problem with his sight.

The father of three told NAN that his sight problem started gradually, and became severe four years ago.

According to him, it was later diagnosed as Glaucoma.

“When the eye problem continued, I said to myself that I should not stay idle, and that I must look for something else to do.

“So, I met one of my people and he suggested that I manage newspaper vending.  I accepted since half-bread is better than none,” he said.

Asked how he manages to identify which particular newspaper a customer wants, Olukerede said: “I have a way of arranging different newspapers from the point of collection such that it makes it easy for me to identify the exact one a customer wants.

“I arrange them starting from the Sun, Punch, Sporting life, Vanguard newspapers and others will follow.”

On his challenges with transactions, he said, that at times, when a customer paid him for a copy, he would ask the customer the amount he had given to him.

“Sometimes, they will give me N100 and will say the amount is N500 or

N1,000. I have a way in which I arrange different denominations in my pockets.

“So, when I get home, I give my children the money to help me count what I have made for the day because I cannot differentiate between N1, 000 and N500.

“This is also to find out whether I have been cheated or not, in most cases, I am cheated, most times I come back home with just N400.

“At times, people will give me N100 and they will collect balance. But I don’t think about that. I know they are cheating themselves,” the vendor said.

Olukerede appealed that people should help him so that he would look for something else to do.

“I have children, I have so many things that I’m supposed to be doing. If I’m doing my furniture work, I know what I gain than this one,” said Olukerede.

The vendor said a particular vehicle usually carried him from Aiyetoro to Iyana Ipaja, where he collects newspapers on daily basis.

He also told NAN that sometimes when the vehicle does not show up, his wife who hawks at Iyana Ipaja market would walk him to the bus stop to board a commercial bus.

“At Iyana Ipaja, I have somebody that will bring the papers to me. So, from there some people will now assist me. I have some drivers that know me too.

“Immediately they see me, they will take me to Olanade junction. From there, I will now be coming to Gowon Estate.

“If I want to cross the road, I will say my brother please, I want to cross the road and someone will assist me,” he said.

Claimed to be potent as sex enhancer among users, Kayan Mata — some local herbal preparations (aphrodisiacs) — has generated electric mix of feelings among women and men when issues on love-making arise.

Literally interpreted as “women things’’ from Hausa language, Kayan Mata is a generic name for a range of aphrodisiacs. However, as women have Kayan Mata, men have maganin maza –“men things’’.

Proponents of the preparations claim that sexual feelings among couples are essentially stimulated by Kayan Mata which has attracted publicity on the internet in recent times.

Though the substances are originally prepared to make-up brides for marriage to enjoy sex life during marriage, observers note that the aphrodisiacs are no longer restricted to ladies who are preparing for marriages alone.

According to observers, for the products efficacy, some critics insinuate that Kayan Mata products are love potions or charms used by women to keep husbands away from other women.

But a seller, Mrs Halima Abdulrahman in Minna, Niger, notes that Kayan Mata is an answer to ladies who request for something to impress and drive their husband “crazy’’ during sex.

She expresses concern about the attitude of the public to sex issues, observing that Kayan Mata business is challenged by women who hide their sexual desires for the fear of being stigmatised, wayward or irresponsible, especially in northern parts of the country.

Another seller in Katsina, simply identified as Mama Miriam, says Kayan Mata is mostly used by ladies or women and “men have their own, some women are so used to it.

“There are different types of Kayan Mata — Gindin Ayu, Zuman Mata, Turaren Tuta, Tsimi Mata and Zumi, which comes in liquid form, among others.

“There is the one that I prepare with chicken and the person will eat it alone; the cost is N45, 000 and the one I prepare with coke which is N65, 000.

“There is also the one I prepare with cow tail, the person will eat that one alone, the price is N25, 000 and Zumi, which comes in liquid form, costs N8, 500 for four litres.

“There are some of lower prices such as N1, 000, N2, 000, N5, 000 and N10, 000 whichever is affordable.

“They are of different names and functions, depending on the type you want. There is no dosage but the person must keep to verbal instructions.

“There are some they can insert in their private parts and there are some you will take with milk, it depends on what you want or the problem you want to solve.

“The patronage is so encouraging, different ethnic groups come to patronise me not only people from the northern parts of the country and I make a lot of turnout from it’’.

Emphasising the commercial values of Kayan Mata, Mrs Hauwa Muhammad, an Instagram Kayan Mata vendor who owns Jaruma Empire, says she has consultations with no fewer than 30 women a week for N50, 000 per session.

Another Kayan Mata Instagram vendor, Mrs Deborah Erioluwapo Ajayi who runs Omoshola’s Place Empire, says her clients include celebrities that she offers “private consultations’’ to and sells products between N15,000 and N350,000.

Mrs Zainab Sani, a user, claim that Kayan Mata “is good because it makes sex more pleasurable.

“It is sex stimulant that enhances sexual pleasure, especially for new couples that want to make their sex life heaven on earth.

“I go for sex enhancement herbs because some men marry many wives and women use it to satisfy the husband to have an amazing sexual experience that he will never forget.

“There are some substances you rub or insert in private part; you can prepare some with chicken, honey, milk, kunun aya, add in soup or stew or mix with your meal.

“I don’t know if there is any side effect because I have not experienced any but what I know is that a woman should not use it when her husband is not around’’, she warns.

In her view, Mrs Zainab Umaru, a vendor, explains that she sells the products for women who find it difficult to be turned on during foreplay.

“Kayan Mata sweets are prescribed for them to chew during the day when they are sure they will get together at night; this would create a tingling sensation for the woman and put her in the mood.

“The most popular Kayan Mata products are kunun aya and tsumi. Tsumi is a mixture of Kayan Mata herbs and camel’s milk which is effective and strong.

“Kunun aya is Tiger nuts juice and it is drunk by men for extra performance; since Kayan Mata is made out of fruits, herbs and natural spices, it is healthy.

“If you want to use Kayan Mata to enhance your sexual pleasure, it is important to be careful of your sources and what exactly that make up the ingredients,’’ she cautions.

Mrs Fatima Ayuba, a Kaya-Mata vendor in Garki 2, Abuja, says she has been in the business for two decades and that her major patronage is from married women and mothers that are preparing their children for marriage.

Another vendor in Wuse Market, Abuja, who pleads anonymity says that his customers are mostly married women who use the products to spice up their sex life with their spouses.

He notes that his customers also include single ladies from across the country and that the use of the products is not limited to ladies from northern parts of the country.

Kayan Mata is recommended for every woman who wants to keep her man because it works and has helped many women to sustain their marriages.

But Mrs Ngozi Okenwa, a business lady in Abuja, says that she bought it once and it didn’t work for her.

“I bought the product because some of my friends that had used it were commending the product.

“I will not patronise or buy the product anymore, but I will not discourage someone else from buying it because it did not work for me,’’ she says.

Speaking also, Mr Wale Ade, a pharmacist says: “I bought it for myself and wife to experiment since am in the medical field but I didn’t see or notice any difference in my performance nor my wife’s feeling.

“My wife is not into sex much, I bought it to see if it will increase her sexual libido or mine but it didn’t, I think it does not work for everyone’’.

However, Miss Hilda Osa, a civil servant in Abuja, believes that the product has helped to strengthen her relationship.

According to her, his wife finds it difficult to get wet and since she begins to use the product, her sexual life has improved.

“Kayan Mata is good, it has helped my relationship because my partner would always complain of excessive dryness but since I started using the product, I get in the mood quickly.

“One thing I also notice about Kayan Mata is that it makes your man enjoy sex with you if used always.

“I recommend it for every woman, especially those with problem of getting wet or delay in the mood for sex because it helps stimulates the vulva and other parts of sexual organs,’’ she observes.

Sharing similar opinion, Mr Joseph Umo an artist, says that he has a customer he calls to usually make Kayan Mata for his wife.

He noted that the product is ancient that had been widely used by many but just gained prominence recently due to social media influence.

According to him, both men and women use it to enhance their sex life.

Umoh notes that he has used it many times and would continue to use it due to its positive effects on his sex life and that of his partner.

“I buy it for my wife because it makes her sweeter, some men that want to keep and enjoy their union encourage their wives or spouses to get Kayan Mata and am one of such men.

“I enjoin both male and female whether you have a problem with arousal or not to imbibe the use of the product due its potency,’’ he advises.

But some medical experts say the use of sex enhancement drugs has both positive and negative implications on human health.

They note that sex enhancement drugs also known as “erectile dysfunction medication’’ are majorly patronised and used by men than women.

Dr Olamide Olowoyo, a consultant physician and nephrologist, advises individuals with erectile dysfunction to seek medical help instead of taking concoctions and medications for sexual enhancement.

Olowoyo, who works at the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Metta in Lagos, warns that concoctions or medication to enhance sexual performance could result in unpredictable health hazards.

Similarly, Dr Ayodele Ademola, a consultant gynaecologist, cautions that it is not advisable to use sex enhancement drugs, except when it becomes exceptionally necessary, and it must be used under strict medical prescription and supervision.

Ayodele warns further that use of sex enhancement drugs could cause cardiovascular diseases like hypertension, heart failure and other related diseases.

According to him, there are many instances where people who used sex enhancement drugs ended up losing their lives.

“I have had a situation where two elderly couples who took erectile dysfunction drugs simultaneously had heart attacks and died,’’ he warned.(NANFeatures)
