The beauty of democracy was on parade today as Nigerians trooped out in their numbers to elect a new set of leaders who will take over the reins of power from President Muhammadu Buhari at the expiration of its tenure on May 29, 2023.
The electoral management agency, INEC had said though 93 million people had registered for the Personal Voter’s Card (PVC) 87, 209,007 persons actually collected their voter cards and it is only these set of Nigerians that would be able to vote today to elect candidates of their choice into the office of the President, the Senate and House of Assembly elections.
Today, election would be taking place in all the 1,491 electoral constituencies, 774 local government areas and 176, 606 polling units in the country.
It had earlier ruled out elections in 240 polling units across the country which INEC said would not witness any election because they were not populated enough and would therefore not be considered expedient to conduct the exercise there.
Contrary to bookmakers who had projected that this election would be decided by the youth, who formed 64 percent of the voting population, it was clear that the elderly came in large numbers to vote.
It was the first time since 2011, when the election cycle went as schedule without suffering any postponement.
