The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has urged residents to properly bag and dispose of their waste, especially animal waste, during and after this year’s Id-el-Kabir celebrations.

Managing Director/CEO of the agency, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, has noted that comprehensive measures were being implemented to ensure a clean and hygienic environment during the festivities, with service providers working assiduously.

He said, “We have put in place a robust system to manage waste effectively during Id el Kabir. Our goal is to ensure that the celebration is enjoyed in a clean and safe environment. We are working tirelessly to ensure this”.

Gbadegesin reiterated LAWMA’s commitment to addressing improper waste disposal practices that could lead to environmental degradation, encouraging residents to engage only assigned PSP operators and avoid cart pushers, whose activities undermined the Authority’s efforts.

“We urge residents to cooperate with us by bagging and containerising waste generated during and after this period, for seamless evacuation by PSP operators. Cart pushers often dispose of waste indiscriminately, causing environmental harm. We cannot condone their activities, to keep the city clean and safe”, he noted.

The LAWMA boss also admonished residents to shun dumping waste on road medians, canals, uncompleted buildings, and other unauthorised locations, adding that the Authority would provide back-up services for PSP operators, in areas with service gaps, to ensure effective waste management.

He admonished motorists to drive cautiously during the festive period, to safeguard the lives of sanitation workers who would be performing their duties on the streets and major roads across the city.

While wishing all residents a happy celebration, he urged them to contact LAWMA’s toll-free lines at 080000LAWMA (08000052962), 07080601020 and 617, for prompt assistance.

The former Chairman of the Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party Deacon Segun Adewale (Aeroland), has described recent attempt to suspend him through the Alimosho local government chapter of the party as a diversionary move fueled by PDP BoT member Chief Olabode George, so as to debar further enquiry about how he had allegedly trade-off the parties political fortune over the years.

Speaking at a well attended general assembly of PDP faithful which later culminated in a press conference at the PDP’s secretariat located along Abeokuta Expressway, Iyana Ipaja Lagos.

Adewale said the move by Bode George was targeted at him to whittle his strength geared towards making him pay for truncating the aspiration of sincere PDP candidates in order to satiate his greed.

“BG is the person I am fighting but he is using others against me, constitutionally speaking it is my ward that can suspend me not the other way round and that even applies to BG as well.

“Given my political maturity now, all I do is for posterity’s sake, I have sued him, for using PDP to negotiate with the APC every eve of election, he will go public canvassing unsuspecting members to vote for another party, how will a good leader do such?

“For more than two decades Bode George has traded the fortunes of the party with the ruling party in Lagos having appointed self as the supreme leader.”

Aeroland maintained that BG’s tactics is to use his associate against him but he remains unperturbed.

“Sadly enough, Chief Bode George has added no value to the party despite the huge benefits and colossal damage he has inflicted on the party due to his double-faced anti-party posture at every election cycle.

“For the records, let me state emphatically that I do not have any problem with Alimosho PDP. As a matter of fact, my ward has reposed confidence in me despite the shenanigans of some bad elements being used by Bode George to cause distraction.

“It’s laughable that these same elements being used by Bode George would act unconstitutionally by suspending me from the party when they do not have such powers. By the constitution of the party, I can only be suspended by my ward.

“He has never won his polling unit since he joined the party. I have not only consistently won at my polling units since I joined the party, I have equally initiated and completed several projects ranging of building boreholes, installing transformers, renovating schools, supporting traders and artisans, paying hospital bills of many party members till date.

“This is aside the billions I have spent in prosecuting my elections as a candidate of the party since 2007. Besides the financial toll, my once thriving business has taken a great hit as the ruling APC has gone on several smear campaigns to malign my business and reputation.

In an attempt to save face and tarnish my image, these charlatans and their paymaster, Bode George levelled a phony allegation of embezzling election funds against me, when in actual fact, I was not the chairman of the presidential campaign committee led by Deji Doherty. When I challenged them to provide evidence of their allegation, they could not.

“Though we are already in court to compel the party to expel Bode George for his anti party activities and the severe damage he has caused to the ambition of hardworking candidates and members of the party.

“However, we are using this medium to pass a vote of no confidence on Bode George that he is not fit to be a member of the party let alone someone that can be referred to as the supreme leader of the party in the state.”

The Peoples Democratic Party local government executive in Alimosho area of Lagos State have indefinitely suspended the former Lagos Chairman of the party Mr. Segun Adewale, sequel an alleged despicable conduct which taints the party’s image.

Adewale’s suspension was perfected during a press conference addressed by at the LGA Chairman Alhaji Hon. Shodiya Isiaka in consonance with LGA exco and eight of the 11 ward chairmen at the PDP’s secretariat in Alimosho on Tuesday.

The LGA exco of the party acted on a report of its disciplinary committee and several petitions from stakeholders, who complained bitterly about Adewale’s high handedness and recommended the activation of the constitutional provision that pertains to disciplinary measures against erring members.

Some LGA exco said to have aligned with Aeroland and purportedly move for the suspension of the Chairman and other exco on social media were also suspended for a month till the report of their misdemeanour is addressed by the disciplinary committee of the party.

The list of the affected exco includes; LGA Vice Chairman, Mrs Esther Adeyemi (Ward 11), the Auditor Mr Jimi Awogbade (Ward 4) the Organizing Secretary Mrs.Bola Bamgbose (04), as well as Mr John Bolaji, the Ward chairmen of Ward E1, and Mr Kenneth Nwanzuere of Ward M1.

According to him, Adewale has been acting like he is beyond the control of the party and encouraging violence while also disparaging the leaders of the party.

Shodiya, while reading a letter dated June 11 and addressed to the PDP State Chairman, Mr Philip Aivoji, said that on March 22 Alimosho PDP members, and entire Lagos State PDP family woke up to a disgusting voice recorded message attributed to Adewale on Alimosho PDP WhatsApp group and beyond, alleging leaders as bribe takers.

The party leaders enumerated Adewale’s infractions to include false allegation against the LGA Exco, making spurious claims on social media that he gave millions of naira to Shodiya poses distasteful public perception of the party.

He said that Adewale was also promoting factions and creating a parallel group against the authentic party structures.

“All these aforementioned offences and others are in flagrant violation of the party’s constitution according to Section 58(1) a, b, h, I, L and m.

“Having satisfied the above quoted section, the LGA Executives of Peoples Democratic Party, Alimosho has no choice, but to follow section 59(1) sub-section D and pronounced that Mr Segun Adewale from Ward 10 (M1) in Alimosho is hereby suspended indefinitely.

“We are using this medium to announce to the whole world that Mr Segun Adewale (Aeroland) is indefinitely suspended and he should be treated accordingly.

“We will also communicate this to the Nigerian Police to be aware of the current status of Mr Segun Adewale within the party.

“This is to guarantee the lives and properties of our dear party members because of his violent disposition,” Shodiya said.

The chairman added that Adewale had also taken seven party faithful including a state leader and former chairman of the LGA exco Mr. Solagbade to the Zone 2 Police Command on flimsy allegations “with evil intention of intimidating them and thereby spreading disaffection within the party.”

According to him, Adewale also openly alleged the National body of PDP and INEC of collecting bribes on social media, “thereby presenting our party to the electorates as a useless party full of bribe seekers and takers.”

“As a party that is guided with reputable constitution, we cannot watch an individual or group of individuals in the Local Government keep on destroying the party without any justification,” he said.

Shodiya said that the party had also referred some of the matters to the party leadership and a properly constituted disciplinary committee, including the Alimosho PDP Elder Council with a view to resolving crises.

He said that Adewale had not been honouring invitations by either the elder council or the disciplinary committee.

“Several petitions were received by the Committee from the L.G.A. Executives, the Ward Excos from Ward 10 (M1) where Mr Segun Adewale comes from, other private and group petitions were equally received by the Committee against Adewale.

“The Committee did a thorough job based on the petitions submitted and the application of the party’s constitution. Their report was submitted to the Exco on Monday.

“In the report, the Disciplinary Committee heavily reprimanded Mr Segun Adewale for all his activities in the party.

“These amount to gross indiscipline, and flagrant violation of the party’s constitution and that he arrogantly committed those offences.”

He said that the committee however recommended that the LGA Exco in the interest of the party should take a proper decision by invoking section 59 sub-section 1 and 2 of the party’s constitution 2017 as amended and apply those section maximally.

Also speaking, Mr Ezekiel Oriyomi, the LGA Secretary, said Adewale had not added any fortune to the party and had been hobnobbing with the ruling party.

“Adewale is known for all the traits stated but he refused to turn a new leaf.

He did not contribute anything to our existence as a party here in this secretariat aside unfulfilled promises.

“We have it on good authority that he had been hobnobbing with APC, collecting money by proxy. He had opportunity to win but was not ready for it.”

…lament over poor supply, exploitation

Some residents of Ojokoro under Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State, have been exposed to further social and economic hardship, due to a challenging power supply, a horrible experience that has been blamed on the neglect, inefficiency, incompetence and frustration on the parts of Ikeja Electric and its staff.

The communities that have been hit by the ensuing horrible but avoidable experience are those connected to Agbe road and Beckley feeders, as indicated in the IE distribution map.

Following the unfolding challenges, residents connected to over 450 transformers with over 80,000 prepaid meters, have been subjected to load shedding, resulting in a very frustrating and archaic “one day on, and one day off” arrangements – for the affected IE customers.

Affected in this terrible and socially backward, as well as economic-unfriendly situation, which has started since January 2024 are customers on Aina 2 and Beckley substations.

The sub-stations are connected to Beckley Feeder – the genesis of the crisis.

Investigation carried out indicated that the crux of the matter is the damage of “GAS CHAMBER BREAKER ”, which is controlling the sub-stations to supply Beckley and Agbe road.

It was gathered that the damage occurred in December, 2023.Shockingly, the equipment in question has been confirmed to be old, weak, as well as outdated.

Informed the claims that the breaker is very expensive and has been estimated to be about N40 million per one. It is also said to be very scarce in the market.

Investigations showed that IE has allegedly made a move to procure the damaged equipment, but claimed that the obsolete brand and model is very expensive and not readily available.

When confronted with this challenge, which ordinarily, a focus and efficient business organisation would have taken a prompt and radical decision to address, no drastic step was taken, hence, resorted to barbaric Feeder load shedding – a day on and a day off.

Regarding inefficiency and incompetence, it was learnt that aside from the issue of Feeder load shedding, IE customers in Ojokoro enclave are also confronted with, other challenges, emanating from transformer load shedding.

To worsen the situation, the residents hardly use six hours power supply – on the day they are supposed to have supply. This is apart from the recent and persistent general system collapse in the country.

As at today, residents complained that they hardly have supply earlier than 4:00pm – the day they are supposed to be lit.

The experience has been bearish, hurtful and since impeded good social life and flourishing community economy.

In clear alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s move to cushion the excruciating pain of economic realities confronting Nigerians the Executive Chairman, Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Mayor Dele Oshinowo has lifted a total of 3600 petty traders through the “WeLift initiative” in the council area.

The young and innovative council boss (Oshinowo) revealed the summation on Monday, at the monthly empowerment programme where another set of no fewer than 400 petty traders got empowered with N50,000 each to bolster their businesses.

Over N20 million grant was disbursed to mitigate the current socio-economic hardship through the council’s monthly “WeLift 400 Petty Traders Initiative” as Oshinowo harped on the fact that grassroots governance should be all about empowering the people and making life better for them.

The Lagos State Chairman of the All-Progressives Congress (APC), Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, and other party stalwart in the state all witnessed the direct transfer of N50,000 cash support to 400 traders selected from various markets in the council area.

“The WeLift400 initiative is designed to empower 400 residents of Agboyi-Ketu by providing them with a grant of 50,000 naira each, this financial support aims to enhance their means of livelihood, alleviate their burdens, and pave the way for greater economic stability.

“This is what I have been doing in the last five years. Our “WeLift Empowerment Programme” has just taken a new dimension now with better methodology to ensure transparency.

“The rational behind it is to lift people from abject poverty and alleviate their suffering. We have decided to help them with token we believe will have multiplier effects on their trade,” Oshinowo said.

Commenting on the criteria used in selecting the beneficiaries of the gesture, the council chief said that his team went round markets and streets to do on-the-spot assessment and market values of some traders, and those who met the criteria, were selected to enjoy the gesture.

According to him, the council partnered with Sterling Bank in the May Edition of the initiative which empowered 450 traders with N50,000 each, but decided to partner with Providus Bank in June gesture.

He said that all the beneficiaries had received the N50,000 bank alert right from the event and the ATM issued to them for withdrawal.

Oshinowo added: “Let us reaffirm our commitment to supporting the dreams and aspirations of every member of our community.

“Our administration will continue to be a pillar of support, fostering an environment where opportunity knows no bounds and every individual has the chance to realize their full potential.

“We will continue to do this, empowering our people is very important especially during this difficult time that our President is trying to put the country on the path of sustainable prosperity and progress.

“This is what we are doing and we are going to continue to do that till the end of my tenure. We will continue to empower our people, build infrastructure, improve on grassroots healthcare, helping our youths, elderly people, building our security and community.”

The council boss added that his team always engaged the community development associations CDA, so no political motivation behind the gesture as it really cuts across the divide.

The Lagos State APC Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi showered encomium on Oshinowo for the laudable gesture while also recounting all his worthy developmental feat and populist programmes targeted at improving the welfare of the residents.

Ojelabi said that everyone including the party’s state executive had been watching Oshinowo’s initiatives for the betterment of the people, adding that the party was not disappointed in the council boss.

“You as truly serving the people with all your strengths, and complementing the efforts of the state government, promoting and expanding the goodwill of our party. You are growing the economy and putting food on the table of the vulnerable.

“With these you are doing, you are securing a better future for yourself. Continue to do what you know how to do best, you shall be rewarded,” he said.

While advising the beneficiaries to make the best use of the grant, Ojelabi urged Oshinowo to do more to make life better for the people at the grassroots.

Urging the people to persevere the more with the Federal Government in its efforts to right all wrongs, Ojelabi assured the people that there would be light at the end of the tunnel.

Also speaking, Chief Jumoko Okoya-Thomas, the APC Women Leader in Lagos State, applauded Oshinowo for prioritising the people above personal and political interest, she also was quick to state the chairman’s track records as it pertains helping the less privileged impressed her greatly.

Okoya-Thomas advised all the beneficiaries to see the N50,000 as a seed and turn it around and create wealth with it, ” it is not for party or social functions. The chairman has done very well and he deserves to go further politically, ” She said.

Some of the beneficiaries who spoke glowingly about the empowerment initiative, note that their businesses would receive a boost and survive the present economic predicament.

Mrs Yemisi Ayeni from Ward G, who commended Oshinowo for the gesture, added that it would go a long way to alleviate the current economic challenges.

Also expressing her joy about the initiative, Mrs. Yinusa Adejoke a food vendor said, ” Oshinowo is doing well. He is always surprising us. May God reward him.”

Alhaja Kadijat Badejo said that the multiplier effect of the gesture would go beyond her trading activity as the daily sustenance of her immediate family better assured through the gesture.

A community-based group under the aegis of Apapa Youth Vanguard (AYV), has urged the former local government boss Hon. Adele Elijah Owolabi, to brace up and re-contest Apapa LGA Executive Chairman’s office, owing to his people-oriented program which greatly transformed the community during his first term.

In a statement signed by the AYV convener Comrade Timilehin Abe, Hon. Adele’s unmatched feat that spanned through his first term in office makes it imperative for the group to urge him to stage a comeback to occupy the office again.

Abe maintained that the former chairman touched all facets of the local government with his magic wand of development.

“We at AYV have critically considered the trend of things within our locality and in clear comparison, we have come to the conclusion that our former Executive Chairman Hon. Adele Elijah Owolabi deserves to come back as our council boss, given his track records during his first term in office.

“He has been able to ameliorate the situation for many people; youths, women and the indigents in the community, his skills acquisition programs are second to none.

“His top-notch fashion design training for youths, empowerment programs for women, artisans and traders to upscale the scope of their businesses, in the area of security he left no stone unturned, giving assistance to the law enforcement units within the locality.

“During his time in office, he was able to surmount the overwhelming traffic congestion in Apapa. A lover of sport Hon. Adele used it as an avenue to gainfully and actively engage the youths, consequently taking them away from involvement in social vices and crime.

“Road rehabilitation and maintenance around Apapa and environs is another important effort of Adele led grassroots governance. We earnestly wish that he throws his hat in the ring again, to jostle for the chairmanship seat in the forth coming council poll.” Abe said.

Hon. Sanai Agunbiade, fondly called SOB, an abbreviation of his full name (Sanai Oyeniran Bolanle), an accomplished technocrat was recently honored by the Eminent Persons of Ikorodu Division for his remarkable contributions and outstanding performance during his tenure in office.

Agunbiade’s worthy feat while at the Lagos State House of Assembly, especially his opposition to a proposed bill that aimed to merge Kosofe, Somolu, and Ikorodu into one division via the new delineation arrangement. SOB staunchly advocated for Ikorodu to remain an independent division, citing its status as the third-largest city in southwest Nigeria.

….Laments shoddy state of projects

Residents of Mende in Lagos have called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to fulfill his electoral promise to provide water transportation facilities and improve channelization projects in the area.

Despite promises made during the 2023 governorship election campaign, the projects have been handled shoddily, and the residents are concerned about the government’s commitment to fulfilling its promise.

The residents lamented the lackadaisical approach to the projects, which has further fueled concerns about neglect and perennial flooding.

They expressed fears that the poor implementation of channelization could worsen environmental problems, and urged the government to prioritize the projects to improve water transportation and prevent further suffering.

The residents also called for regular supervision from the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructures to ensure that the projects are completed efficiently.

A community leader in Mende urged civil society platforms advocating for good governance to lend their voices to the agitation for prioritization of channelization projects to improve the water transportation system in Lagos State.

The residents’ statement read, “We haven’t asked for much. Governor Sanwo-Olu promised to dredge the waterways in our area and make water transportation accessible and affordable. It’s disheartening that government usually forgets that the masses need basic amenities.”

They urged the government to fulfill its promises and address the shortcomings in the implementation of channelization projects without further delay.
