Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum has issued a stern warning to transport unions, including the Road Transport Workers Union of Nigeria (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and Clearance Agents Association, stating that government will impose severe penalties, including jail terms on those that violate load restriction laws in the state.

Zulum served the warning in Maiduguri on Thursday during a meeting with the leadership of transport unions in the state at the council chamber of the Borno State Government House.

The governor emphasized the importance of adhering to load restrictions as mandated by government’s transportation regulations, revealing that Borno State Government will send a bill to the State House of Assembly for the review of existing road and transportation laws to provide explicit and stern punishment for violators.

Zulum also instructed that weigh bridges are to be installed in some strategic places to ensure that owners and operators of heavy trucks adhere to load restrictions on highways.

Meanwhile, the governor directed the Ministry of Works and Housing to ensure the completion of works at the ongoing trailer park project in Maiduguri.

The governor explained that with the completion of the trailer park, government will fully enforce the state transport law banning trailers and other vehicles conveying heavy loads from accessing the city centre.

Zulum also stated that the measures are aimed at protecting road infrastructure in the state, saving huge amounts that could be used for maintenance.
