To curb the huge losses incurred by Nigerians owing to the sharp practices prevalent in the digital space, Economic and financial crime operatives and experts have proffered cybersecurity awareness creation as a workable tool in stemming the spate of cyber attacks and its grave consequences.

Rising from a Cybersecurity Awareness Workshop organised by H’QUBE Consultating Limited for students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Saturday, the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), the  Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and cyber security experts reiterates the urgency for cybersecurity training and awareness.

The workshop, themed ” Impact of Cybersecurity Awareness  at Combating Cybercrimes ” was held at NITHUB, UNILAG.

Stakeholders and participants concerned by the wanton fintech fleece which accounts for the loss of humongus amount of money in a matter of seconds were urged to ensure that they do not fall victim to cybercriminals through careless handling of their data.

.

The Lagos Zonal Commander of EFCC, Mr Michael Wetkas while addressing the students, urged the participants not to compromise security of their data especially their BVN and NIN and not to cross the red flags.

Wetkas, who was represented by Mr Suleiman Jijiwa, the Deputy Head, Cybercrimes, EFCC, maintained that crimes which used to be the usual bloody attacks has now transmuted into the digital space and many people had fallen victims because of greed and ignorance.

“All they (cyber fraudster) need now is laptop, network and knowledge. Crimes have no border unlike before, you have to be there physically to perpetrate it.

“EFCC is watching..If you see something, say something, then we will do something to arrest the criminals,” he said.

Wetkas urged the students to imbibe the culture of reporting cybercrime right on time, saying this could be done even as an anonymous.

According to him, every cybercrime can be traced if reported appropriately.

Advising the participants to always protect their data and not be hasty in releasing it without cross checking, Wetkas added that students must be mindful of undue risk exposure through what they put on social media platforms because many of them lacked forms of social- engineering attack vector.

Urging the students to stay clear of cybercrimes, the commander decried the fact that some staff of financial institutions are most times compromised thereby paving way for the cybercrimes.

According to him, the commission shares information with other agencies in the cyber space within and outside the country to clamp down on the internet fraudsters.

Also speaking, Mr Ezike Onyema, representing State Zonal Head of ICPC, Mr Abdul Kabir Elelu, emphasised data protection, urged the participants to be careful of what they put on their social media space.

“We need to be safe. Protect your BVN. Your BVN must be protected, don’t let it out, ” he said.

Speaking, Mr. Abdul-Azeez Ghazali, the Chief Executive Officer, H’QUBE Consulting Limited, said that a lot more ought to be done in ensuring security in the digital space ” as human are the weakest link”.

Stating that every data breach was as a result of human error, Ghazali said that everyone must be cybersecurity conscious.

According to him,  the workshop is necessary because the level of investment in cybersecurity awareness is low in Nigeria.

“Data privacy must be ensured. You must be the guard. Nobody can protect you better than yourself. We must try to secure ourselves and be careful in the data space.

“We must be secured as truly nobody is immuned or free. We must keep improving our cyberspace security. Your pin must not be your date of birth.

“Most victims of cyber attacks undergo emotional distress and many are really crying out there. Don’t be reckless in the digital space,” Ghazali, the chartered accountant and cybersecurity expert said.

He urged the people to always lock their SIM card to avert likely impersonation and identity theft which is now rampant.

He said good knowledge of cybersecurity could avail graduates at the labour markets a better and much rewarding job placement because the world was concerned about ensuring security in the cyber space.

Earlier Mr. Ben Ekwere, a financial expert also urged participants to always double check the security features of website link before clicking on it, so as not to fall prey of cybercrime, added that the cost of cyber breaches was higher than what it takes to secure it.

In his remarks, Dr Victor Odumuyiwa, the Director, NITHUB, commended the organisers for empowering the people with knowledge and trainings to be solution providers.

“If you are not greedy, you will not fall easily into the hand of the cyber criminals. Their tactics is to scare and lure, be careful about how you avail your data on the digital space,” Odumuyiwa said.

The highlights of the event was the presentation of new laptop computers to two students, one of whom is a physically challenged lady Miss Chioma Okeke, who was the first participant to get to the venue of the workshop.

Following the disruption on March 14, 2024, which affected data and voice services due to cuts in undersea fibre optics along the coasts of Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal, we are pleased to announce that services have now been restored to approximately 90% of their peak utilization capacities.

All operators who were impacted by the cuts have taken recovery capacity from submarine cables which were not impacted by the cuts, and have thus recovered approximately 90% of their peak utilisation capacities.

Mobile Network Operators have assured the Commission that data and voice services would operate optimally pending full repairs of the undersea cables as they have managed to activate alternative connectivities to bring back the situation to normalcy.

We extend our appreciation to telecom consumers for their patience and understanding during the downtime caused by the undersea fibre cuts.

Iperu-Remo is near the Redemption Camp of the Redeemed Christian Church of God located at Kilometre 45, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The Traditional Ruler of Iperu Remo, Oba Adeleke Basibo, the Alaperu of Iperu Remo, conducted the ground breaking ceremony.

The NIMechE National Chairman, Dr Olufunmilade Akingbagbohu, said at the event that the academy would nurture the next generation of engineers.

Akingbagbohu said that the academy was aimed at bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills in mechanical engineering.

She added that it would equip young mechanical engineers with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly-evolving industry.

“The academy aims to train 5,000 young engineers for the labour market, empowering them through learning, training, internship programmes and certification courses,” she said.

“The collaborative efforts with MacArthur incorporated in Canada were important toward realising the goal, we also there were plans to have trainers from MacArthur to contribute to the academy’s programmes.

Akingbagbohun added that the academy is first of its kind and would collaborate with University of Lagos, Toyota Nigeria, Naval dockyard and Innoson Motors to aid impartation of requisite knowledge.

According to her the academy would give attention to the ongoing conversion from petrol to gas engines as the Nigeria Liquidfied Natural Gas Ltd. had promised to put up a building in the academy while Sir Keshinton Adebutu, Founder of Premier Lotto, promised to build a workshop in the academy.

She called on other well- meaning Nigerians, organisations and governments to support the project tagged: “Graduate Employability Programme”.

Some experts in the construction sector have advised bricklayers to embrace new technologies for durable constructions that would boost production and guarantee quality assurance.

The experts made the call in Ikeja at the 2023 edition of the Lagos State Bricklayers Association (LSBA) Annual General Meeting (AGM) with the theme: “Traditional Masonry Techniques and Advancing Building Technology”.

The event was sponsored by Dangote Cement Plc.

The guest speaker, Mr Kunle Awobodu, who is a former National President of Nigerian Institute of Building, compared traditional construction methods with new ones driven by technology.

Awobodu, the pioneer President of Building Collapse Prevention Guild, stressed the need for bricklayers to adapt to the new methods through capacity building programmes.

He advised them to change their perception of bricklaying as a dirty job which they could not wish for their children.

“Bricklaying is a good trade that the society needs on daily basis, and you can make a lot of money through it,” he said.

He said that bricklaying was important for both employment and wealth creation in the face of scarcity of white collar jobs.

Awobodu said that youths should be encouraged to take up bricklaying to be gainfully employment after graduating from schools.

He said that such an engagement would discourage them from internet fraud refered to as ‘Yahoo Yahoo”.

Dr Emmanuel Aladeloba, a former Head of Building Department, Yaba College of Technology, thanked a team from Dangote Cement Plc. which conducted training for the artisans.

He hoped that ir would develop the capacities of artisans.

Aladeloba, however, called on artisans to be honest and transparent while working on sites unmonitored.

He charged them to use the right measurements and materials.

“It is only when the house you built stays for long without cracking or collapsing that you can be called a bricklayer,” he said.

He warned artisans against accepting low pay to engage in substandard construction that could collapse in the future and result in loss of lives and waste of investments.

He urged them to network with senior colleagues to further develop skills to remain relevant.

He advised them to apply lessons they learnt from the training on the use of right measurements, angles and dimensions to guarantee quality assurance for durable construction.

Aladeloba explained how site operations had been automated through new technologies to make constructions easier.

“You don’t need to carry blocks on your heads now; there are machines that can do that as well as plastering machine which will ease your work and enhance productivity,” he said.

He also advised the bricklayers to introduce cadre grading based on experience so that new entrants would not earn same pay with experienced ones in the daily pay schedule.

The Dangote team educated the artisans on different cement types, usage and the need to always check the expiry dates of products before use to ensure durability of projects.

Earlier, in his welcome address, LSBA President, Mr Taye Dauda, thanked Dangote Cement for training and re-training its members.

Dauda said that nobody was above training no matter his years of experience on the job.

He promised LSBA’s continued collaboration with relevant agencies to curb building collapse in Lagos State.

The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, has requested Nokia Networks to increase its investments in Research and Development (R&D) to support the growth of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Nigeria.

Maida spoke when a delegation from Nokia Networks of Finland led by the Deputy Minister, Under-Secretary of State for International Trade from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, Jarno Syrjala, visited the Commission recently to explore further opportunities for mutually-beneficial relationships.

He told the delegation that the Nigerian government is keenly interested in harnessing Nokia’s capabilities through technology transfer to support Nigerian youths in technical skills.

The Nigerian government is targeting training of three million youths in ICT skills to advance the country’s digital economy.  “We are keen on getting the youths employed, as our Ministry is targeting three million youths for skills acquisition,” the EVC said.

Maida informed the Nokia contingent that the Commission places primacy in R&D as the bedrock of any knowledge economy, and for advancement of innovation.

He, therefore, urged Nokia and other Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), to explore R&D opportunities to deepen local content development in Nigeria.

While congratulating Maida on his appointment by President Bola Tinubu as Nigeria’s chief telecom regulator, Syrjala said the purpose of the visit was to explore areas of collaboration to support Nigeria’s digital economy agenda.

Syrjala recalled Nokia’s continued partnership with communications service providers in Nigeria, as well as cable and other operators to deliver critical network systems with high performance, reliability, and security. He noted that Nokia already has an R&D centre in Nigeria, and would target greater investment in this regard.
