The trio of Galaxy Backbone Plc, Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN) and Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) have drummed up support for the 2022 ITREALMS E-Waste Dialogue.

The event scheduled for Thursday, December 8 at the Welcome Centre Hotels, Lagos under the theme, ‘e-Waste: Recycle it all, no matter how small!’ according to the Group Executive Editor, ITREALMS Media, Mr. Remmy Nweke, who made these disclosures at the weekend in Lagos, revealed that the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Galaxy Backbone Plc, Prof. Muhammed Bello Abubakar, would be speaking to ‘Recycle it all for e-governance’.

ALTON, Nweke said, confirmed participation through its chairman, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo just as the chief executive officer, IXPN, Mr. Mohammed Rudman also.

Galaxy Backbone, he said,  is an ICT services provider in Nigeria since 2006; providing network management, communications and digital infrastructure services to organisations in the public and private sector, as well as hosting and cybersecurity services.

Nweke also said that ALTON is a body corporate, officially recognized by the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Nigerian Communications Commission as the official industry body for all providers of telecommunications and subsidiary services in the country.

Further, he noted that IXPN, a non-for-profit and membership based organisation that provides a platform for networks to interconnect directly within Nigeria, to ensure that local Internet traffic remains local, rather than having to transcend boundaries of different countries before reaching its recipients within the same locality.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), Prof. Aliyu Jauro, had confirmed to keynote at the 2022 ITREALMS E-Waste Dialogue.

ITREALMS Media inc, he said, is holding the event in continuation of commemoration of the International E-waste Day (IeWD) 2022, under its flagship ITREALMS e-Waste Dialogue.

Nweke, who also is the editor-in-chief, ITREALMS Media group, noted, Nigeria is principally hampered by the Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) with estimated 1.1 million tonnes of e-waste annually arising from both local and imported Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) under the guess of second hand or fairly used.

He underlined that this year’s commemoration of the International E-Waste Day focuses on small, end-of-life electrical and electronic appliances which presents a significant challenge with items such as cell phones, electric toothbrushes, toasters and cameras often discarded incorrectly.

Nigeria has made some significant success in the drive towards enthroning national digital economy for the country.

This was disclosed by the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta in his keynote address at the 2022 Nigeria DigitalSENSE Forum series on ‘5G: Enthroning Internet Governance for Digital Economy’ held at Welcome Centre Hotels, International Airport Road, Lagos and powered by DigitalSENSE Africa, a project of ITREALMS Media group at the weekend.

Nigeria DigitalSENSE Forum on Internet Governance for Development is put together by DigitalSENSE Africa, a project of ITREALMS Media group; made up of internationally reputed and award-winning Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry analysts and perception managers; professionally affiliated to African Regional At-Large Organisation (AFRALO) for shaping the future of the Internet. DigitalSENSE Africa is a certified At-Large Structure (ALS) of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Buttressing his position, EVC who was represented by a Deputy Director and Head of Spectrum Database Management at NCC, Engr. Abraham Oshadami, while dwelling specifically on “5G: Enthronement in Nigeria’s Telecom Sector” outlined some 11-points to drive home his assertion.

Some of these steps, he said include the creation of a full-fledged department of Digital Economy in NCC with a mandate amongst others to ensure that the programs and targets set in the NNBP 2020-2025 and NDEPS 2020 – 2030 are rigorously pursued, tracked, and attained; INFRACO Companies have been licensed to deploy fibre on an Open Access Basis in Six Geopolitical Zones of the country and Lagos State. Approval to commence rollout was given in April, 2021.

According to him, they have developed and secured the Federal Executive Council approval on Nigerian 5G Policy to guide deployments of 5G services nationwide, while acknowledging efforts of the Honourable Minister of Communication & Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami.

In addition, he said, NCC has successfully licensed 2 lots of 100 MHz bandwidth in the 3.5 GHz Spectrum band for 5G deployment in December 2021, just as they set up and expanded the Internet Exchange Point capacity of 930 MB/s for Abuja to Lagos Route, 620 MB/s for Abuja to Kano Route, 310 MB/s for Lagos to Port Harcourt route, bolstering landed total offshore broadband capacity of 50.74 TB comprising 40TB Submarine and 10.74 TB of Satellite and the figures are already set for increase.

Equally, he said, followed up on the global industry trends on the 5G Spectrums such as the 26 GHz, 38 GHz and 42 GHz bands harmonized in World Radio Conference 2019 (WRC-19), NCC has updated the National Frequency Allocation Table (NFAT) to reflect the outcome of the WRC-19 through opening up the 60 GHz V-band; Opened up the 70/80GHz E-band for both point-to-point and point-to-multi-points deployments; and developed and published the Spectrum Trading Guidelines amongst other benefits.

These, he said, are evident in the efforts of the commission being demonstrated in the smooth update of previous technologies such as 2G, 3G and the 4G; and the one that is now being implemented to ensure the deployment and adoption of 5G infrastructure and services in Nigeria.

Equally speaking, the Director-General (DG), National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Mallam Balarabe Musa said that in the past few days, digital technology usage around the world have improved including raising the bar on credibility of election results across the continent.

Mallam Balarabe, who was represented by a delegation led by the Lagos Zonal Director, Dr. Chibuike Ogwumike, charged stakeholders including various regulatory organs, industries, network operators, service-technology providers, public and private partnership organisations to synergise and be in continued dialogue to address the challenges that may face the widespread 5G deployment worldwide.

Other activities at the twin-event was the unveiling of a book authored by the multi-award winning journalist and Group Executive Editor, Remmy Nweke which was reviewed by Chairman, Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) Engr. Gbenga Adebayo and President, African Health Journalists Association & Principal Consultant/CEO InterPares Media Limited Dr. Declan Okpalaeke, whereas the Chief Unveiler was the Chief Executive Officer, Amano Investments West Africa and President, Mandilas International Trade Centre, Chief Anthony Amechi Okeke.

Negative use of the power of social media has been blamed for the amplification of claims by uninformed individuals who said the Fifth Generation (5G) Mobile Networks have links to Coronavirus.

This was the position of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) at the webinar tagged, 2020 Digital Rights Series on Nigeria IPv6 Roundtable hosted by ITREALMS in collaboration with DigitalSENSE Africa Media on Saturday, with the theme: Role of IP in 5G v COVID-19 Debate.

Chairman, ALTON, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo made this assertion in his paper entitled: 5G versus Coronavirus: Reality or Fiction.

Adebayo who was ably represented by the Head of Operations at ALTON, Mr. Gbolahan Owonuga said the supposed 5G Coronavirus connection came from ignorant people on the Internet trying to link things that were not at all connected.

“Unfortunately, the power of social media has only amplified some of these misguided comments,” he said.

He quoted experts at the World Health Organisation (WHO) as saying that there is no dispute that animals are the source of COVID-19.

“Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans,” he buttressed.

On the safety of 5G technologies, ALTON maintained that the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) recently published its updated guidelines to provide improved protection for higher frequency ranges.

Also, ALTON chief said that the new guidelines stipulated among others that time and body exposure restrictions, provide protection against all adverse health effects from exposure to electromagnetic frequencies, including for frequencies above 6 GHz, such as those emitted by 5G and future technologies.

“Compliance with these new guidelines ensures the safe use of 5G,” he said, stressing that “ICNIRP Guidelines for Limiting Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields (100 kHz to 300 GHz).”

Also, ALTON noted that though 5G has been a cause for concern over the increased deployment of towers it will require. Radio signals for 5G technology are similar to those already generated by 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi networks.

“By using small cells, or low-power, low-range transmissions, 5G smart antennas send signals where required. These cells enable localised use of signals while increasing coverage and efficiency,” ALTON insisted.

Welcoming participants earlier, the Executive Director, Operations, DigitalSENSE Africa Media, Mrs Nkem Nweke, said that the webinar in collaboration with ITREALMS became imperative to join the world in commemoration of World IPv6 Day despite the coronavirus pandemic.

“This webinar today, is in commemoration of the World IPv6 Day, 2020, as part of our DigitalSENSE drive for education and enlightenment under the partnership of ITREALMS digital rights series,” she said.

Mrs. Nweke recalled that since year 2011, following depletion of the Internet Protocol version Four (IPv4), DigitalSENSE Africa, has led efforts under the aegis of the Nigeria IPv6 Roundtable in commemoration of the World Internet Protocol Version Six (IPv6) Day, every June 6.

“… To promote the adoption of IPv6 for the products and services as well as create awareness, especially in Nigeria, with core determination that we cannot wait to continuously play leapfrogging on technologies and positive usage too for a better society,” she said.

In addition, the Executive Director commended ALTON and Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN) for their support and collaboration, urged for more alliance with stakeholders, saying her office is open for partnership in favour of engendering industry growth.
