…Registers 615 new cooperatives

The Lagos State Government says it plans to inject additional funds into Cooperative Societies across the state to accelerate development.

Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade & Investment, Mrs Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, made this known at a news conference in Alausa in Ikeja, Lagos.

The event was organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment in collaboration with the Lagos State Cooperative Federation (LASCOFED) to kick-start the 2024 International Day of Cooperatives celebration.

Ambrose-Medebem, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr Olugbemiga Aina, said that the government had also registered 615 new cooperatives from 2023 to date and had mechanisms to register several more.

She explained that this would be an addition to the over 3,000 existing associations, to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Ambrose-Medebem stated that between 2023 and the present, 615 cooperatives were registered, comprising 435 Cooperative Multipurpose Societies, 115 Cooperative Thrift and Credit Societies, and 65 Cooperative Agricultural Multipurpose Societies.

She noted the government’s efforts to verify capabilities and expand the scope of cooperatives beyond workplaces to attract more grants for the state’s development.

“We have over three thousand cooperatives, which is quite small for a Mega City of almost 24 million people. We need to increase the numbers.

“We are proactive in thinking that we need to inject more funds into these cooperative societies.

“That is why this amount has been put in the budget, but we must ensure the proper application of grants based on the technical capabilities of those receiving funds,” she said.

Ambrose-Medebem mentioned that several experts had approached the ministry for capacity building to equip cooperatives for higher funding, benefiting Lagos residents.

She explained that the theme for the 2024 International Cooperatives Day was apt for celebrating the contributions of cooperatives to socio-economic development.

The commissioner outlined the schedule for this year’s International Day of Cooperatives, starting with a news conference.

The event will continue with visits to orphanages and old people’s homes on Wednesday, July 3, at 10:00 a.m., a Jumat Service at Alausa Secretariat Central Mosque on Friday.

Also, there will be Grand Finale on Saturday, July 6, featuring lectures, panel discussions, raffle draws, and merit awards.

The celebration will be concluded on Sunday with a Thanksgiving Service at The Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, at 10:00 a.m.

She emphasised that Lagos State uses this annual event to raise awareness and deepen public knowledge about the benefits of cooperatives.

“The theme for the 2024 International Day of Cooperatives is ‘Cooperatives: Building A Better Future For All,” she stated.

Ambrose-Medebem enumerated the benefits and contributions of cooperatives to wealth creation, social integration, prosperity and economic development.

She highlighted areas of partnership and grants that had helped Cooperative Societies in Lagos State expand their operations, creating wealth and reducing poverty.

She noted that the state government provides an enabling environment for businesses to thrive through cooperatives, promoting economic growth and attracting investors.

“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has acknowledged the significant role of over three thousand cooperative societies in the state.

It is would be recalled that associations and enterprises had in times past help citizens improve their lives while contributing to the economic, social and cultural advancement of their communities, the state, and the nation.

The administration recognises the Cooperative Movement as highly democratic, locally autonomous, but internationally integrated,” she concluded.

Gynaecologists and other medical experts have revealed the reason behind the increasing number of Nigerians experiencing infertility.

The experts revealed this at the 2024 Fertility Conference, held in Lagos on Saturday .

The annual event, themed “Infertility – Need for Knowledge and Early Intervention,” was organized by the Parah Family Foundation (PFF).

The lead speaker, Prof. Preye Fiebai, a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from the University of Port Harcourt, highlighted ignorance and lack of awareness as major factors contributing to the rise in infertility cases. He noted that many Nigerian men were unaware that the ability to ejaculate did not equate to being fertile.

According to Prof. Fiebai, research indicates that 20-45% of women in Nigeria are infertile, but often, the cause of infertility in marriages is not the women. The research breakdown shows that 40% of infertility cases are due to male factors, 40% to female factors, 15% to combined male and female factors, and 5% are unexplained.

Prof. Fiebai listed causes of infertility in men, including erectile dysfunction, impotence, decreased libido, psychogenic issues, endocrinopathies, age, and overweight, among others. For women, he pointed to cervical factors, uterine factors, diseases of the fallopian tubes, and problems with ovulation.

Prof. Kehinde Habeeb Tijani, a Professor of Surgery from the University of Lagos, added factors such as age, weight, stress, excessive alcohol consumption, exposure to radiation, and constant exposure of the testicles to high temperatures as contributors to infertility.

Dr. Kemi Ailoje, MD of Lifeline Fertility Clinic, and Rev. Tony Akinyemi concurred with the other speakers and offered various remedies to overcome infertility. They also advised women over the age of 54 to avoid aspiring for pregnancy due to the associated risks.

In her welcome address, conference convener, Princess Dayo Odukoya described the infertility rates and causes as “alarming.” She emphasized the need for ongoing awareness to encourage couples experiencing infertility to seek solutions early in their marriages rather than delaying.

“The foundation’s primary objective is to share vital information, enlighten and provide the relevant support system for families undergoing fertility challenges in order to eradicate ignorance, the misguided myths and social stigma associated with delayed fertility in our society.

“The choice of the theme for this year conference; Infertility- Needs for Knowledge and early intervention; is to further reiterate the importance of continued awareness, and knowledge about the challenges of infertility and more importantly, action to be taken as early as possible if not, it may cause further delays especially in late marriage and aged women.
“The journey to Parenthood is lonely and must not be threaded alone. There is need for a support system on this journey and that is where Parah Family comes in.
” The rate of infertility and the causes are alarming such that it requires a continued education that would enable couples undergoing the challenges to speak out on time and seek solution early in marriage rather than wait until later.”, she said

At the conclusion of the conference, the PFF offered two free IVF treatments and one free fertility investigation to three participating couples.

It evidently marks the commencement of an eternal journey to the great beyond as his mortal body takes on immortality.

Pa Kasunmu who held the following titles prior to his demise- Amoye-Ilu of Lagos, Fiwagboye of Abuja and Akeweje of Egbaland exemplifies what it really means to be an enigma, as prominent Nigerians thronged the venues of his burial programmes.

In his lifetime, the late High Chief Adekunle Olaosebikan Kasunmu, was a very industrious personality, a renowned socialite, an astute political leader in Ifako Ijaye local government, a consummate Christian and community leader. He was a successful civil engineer and business personality who made made great impacts on a lot of lives.

His late mother, Chief (Mrs) Elfrida Williams originated from the Coker and Williams families of Iporo Ake, Abeokuta while his father came from Onilegbale royal family of Lagos. As a young man, he got married to Abiodun Arafat, the beautiful daughter of the late Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, who was then the best friend of Mama Elfrida Williams. The marriage produced only one child, Hon. Adedamola Richard Kasunmu, who is currently the Deputy Majority Leader of Lagos State House of Assembly. Chief (Mrs) Abiodun Kasunmu died in 2006.

His only surviving sibling, Chief (Mrs) Olubunmi Anyaoku is married to former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku.

This explains why the Anyaoku siblings, Mrs Adiba Anyaoku Ighodaro and Yemi Anyaoku were fully involved in the planning and execution of the burial ceremony. During the event Hon. Kasunmu commended them immensely for their contributions and support towards the success of the ceremony.

It is worthy of note to state that the Kasunmu’s are traditionally Anglican by faith and this fact resonated loudly from the Service of Songs held at St. John Anglican Church Iju Ishaga Lagos on Tuesday 18th June, 2024 followed by a well-attended Wake Keep Service at St Peters Church, Faji, Lagos Island on Wednesday 19th June,2024 and which climaxed in a final interment service at the Church on 20th June,2024 before his body was finally committed to the mother earth at Ikoyi Cemetery.

A human rights advocacy group Centre for Human and Socio-economic Rights (CHSR), has officially written the Lagos State Governor Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Speaker of the state House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa to intervene in the matter of a citizen-Chief Mrs. Dorcas Adeyinka and prevail on the Nigerian Police Force to bring down the frivolous WANTED flagging placed on her.

CHSR in the letter signed by its National President Comrade Alex Omotehinse, pleaded with the Lagos Government to wade into the matter, on the grounds that the woman in question had initially honored the law enforcement’s call in time past and if for clear reasons she could not do same within the time frame given by the security agency now, such should not amount to her been placed on the list of wanted persons.

The group in its submission cited the positive impacts of Adeyinka in the state’s economic growth. which was tied to her philanthropic contribution in empowering the poor and indigent Lagosian.

According to CHSR letter to the Lagos state government, it got the wind of the untoward manner Adeyinka’s fundamental human right was being trampled upon through Dorcas Adeyinka Empowerment Foundation SAVE OUR SOUL complaint letter dated 4th June, 2024.

CHSR note that “the petitioner was invited by Nigeria Police force to Abuja headquarters for investigation which she appeared in person and agreed by all parties that further engagement will be communicated to them but in a shocking turn of events, the Nigeria Police Force declared her WANTED without proper notification or due process as enshrined in the Police acts, code of conduct and ethics not only violated her rights but also perpetuated the cycle of injustice.

“Following careful review of the petition and our subsequent findings, we unraveled an orchestrated ploy to trample on her rights to means of freedom   with regards to false murder allegations, illegal displaying of nude images, conspiracy to indict.

“The latest action of the Nigeria Police Force in declaring her WANTED without due process, shocked and amazed us and the red alert is uncalled for.

“This has gone a long way in affecting the less privileged and suffering Nigerian masses which her foundation is on daily basis taking-off the street to boost economy growth of Lagos State as an Epicenter of the country.

“As a law-abiding citizen and a critical stakeholder in the state she is pleading that her rights to freedom is a fundamental human right which ought not to be trampled upon.”

CHSR urge the state government to prevail on the leadership of the Nigeria Police force “to kindly bring down the flagging WANTED placed on Chief Mrs. Dorcas Adeyinka to enable her to exercise her right to freedom, so as to also ameliorate suffering faces of the poor towards human capacity building which will vehemently contribute to gross growth index of the state.”

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday called on the relevant offices of the government to embark on massive enlightenment of the residents on the best ways to curtail the spread of cholera in the state.

This was as the House also called for the activation of some sections of the State health law to combat the health emergency which is said to have spread across some local governments leading to the death of 29 people as at Monday.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, who presided over the sitting, further called for investigation into the source of the bacteria disease outbreak to enable the government strategise better in its bid for a solution.

“We must encourage the government to continue to sensitise the people in every language that is spoken in Lagos,” Dr. Obasa said while supporting the calls by his colleagues for the authorities to maintain drainages and canals and ensure proper sewage systems.

Raising a motion on the matter earlier, the chairman of the health committee of the House, Hon. Lawal Aina Musbau, moved that the government should urgently mobilise resources and personnel to combat the disease.

Among other demands, he said there was a need for the education of residents with emphasis on basic cleanliness while calling on sanitation officers to ensure they carry out their jobs effectively.

On their parts, Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh and Gbolahan Yishawu, urged that more attention should be on the provision of drinkable water to the residents of the state as this is one way to check the spread or reoccurrence of the disease.

The Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, has called on residents to observe the best personal and domestic hygiene, as well as proper waste management practices, to curb the spread of rampaging cholera.

He gave the advice in his office, Ijora Olopa, against the recent outbreak of the disease, which has claimed some lives, leaving many hospitalised.

Cholera, a severe diarrheal illness caused by infection with the bacterium vibrio cholerae, spreads primarily through contaminated water and food, thriving rapidly in unsanitary conditions.

He said, “The outbreak of cholera in the state is a serious public health concern. It is imperative that every resident takes proactive measures to prevent further spread of the disease. Ensuring proper personal and domestic hygiene, including efficient waste management, will go a long way in curbing the spread of the fatal disease”.

The LAWMA boss suggested several precautionary measures including: proper waste disposal; ensuring safe drinking water; frequent hand-washing with soap; food safety practices and use of proper sanitation facilities among others.

He admonished residents to shun indiscriminate refuse dumping and to imbibe the practice of bagging and disposing of their waste using covered bins, to prevent the spread of diseases by vectors, and to ensure seamless evacuation by assigned PSP operators.

Gbadegesin said the Authority would continue to intensify efforts at making sure that waste generated across the state was promptly and efficiently managed, with service providers working around the clock to clean up black spots.

He further appealed to residents to always wash their hands when they come in contact with waste, either while bagging or putting in covered bins, urging them to align with the state government’s environmental and health safety policies, by avoiding reckless waste dumping in drains, road medians, among other negative environmental practices.

“We are fully committed to the health and safety of every Lagosian. Our teams are on the ground, ensuring that waste is properly collected and disposed of to minimise health risks. However, we need the cooperation of all residents to maintain a clean and safe environment,” he stressed.

It would be recalled that the agency had over the years championed the campaign on the importance of waste bagging and proper containerisation, through various programmes and initiatives.
